Square-Enix has announced a new MMORPG based on the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XIV Online, for PC and PlayStation 3.It was announced at some point during Sony’s 18-and-a-half hour press conference at E3. The trailer is available online,I think the main issue people are having is this: where is Final Fantasy XIII? How about Square Enix release that game before it goes and announces the next one?
And unless Final Fantasy XIV is demonstrably better than Final Fantasy XI, to say nothing of that pesky game called World of warcraft.
Not all news at E3 is good. Yesterday, Sony announced that God of War III, a title every single PS3 owner is looking forward to, would not be released until March 2010. We had hoped for a holiday release, alongside AAA titles like BioShock 2 and Assassins Creed II.I loved what I saw on screen, I have to say I was a bit disappointed at the same time. It’s not that the game looked bad or it wasn’t brutal enough but it just fell short of my lofty expectations somehow.
The game looks to include the usual quick time moves that usually result in Kratos ripping some monsters limbs off or smashing its face into the ground multiple times.
The demo showed what looked to be a huge boss battle with a titan that included the Sun God, Helios. I still kick myself for not playing God of War 2 when I had the chance and I don't plan to miss my chance to play this game.
Stay tuned for updates. Sony has a hell of a show from Microsoft to topple. Seems to be a slight delay so far. Not sure what the deal is. Be sure to catch up on my hopes and expectations for the Sony show here.
Sony has a lot riding on the fourth instalment in the God of War series. The first two PlayStation 2 releases were enormously popular, selling millions around the world, but by the time they came out PS2 had already vanquished Xbox, and indeed everyone else. By the time God of War III comes out, which may not even be this year, the story will be very different. Still, in the ongoing console battle between PS3 and Xbox 360, who better to fight Sony's corner than the, er, God of War?
Sitting down in Sony's Santa Monica studio to find out, it turns out the story, which picks up right where God of War II left things, has Kratos and an army of Titans out to eradicate the remaining gods Helios, Hermes, Hades and Zeus - a revenge story that sets up plenty of brutal battles with an onslaught of menacing enemies. "The biggest challenges in creating this sequel were living up to the high expectations fans have from the previous games and continuing to evolve this series," says lead combat designer Adam Puhl, by way of explanation. "We don't want people thinking, 'Oh well, it's the same game.'"
From a first look at playable code in high definition, the signs are positive. The work this team has put into the game is immediately evident from the bulging biceps of the Son of Zeus to the intricate, gory details as he eviscerates enemies, leaving entrails in his wake (always the best way to go). Factor in the additional development time that's still allocated and, simply put, this isn't your PS2 God of War.
The team uses Kratos as the starting point for everything, trying to represent that brutality, that visceral essence, in the combat and in all the fighting (although hopefully not in his extra-curricular shagging). Kratos has certainly never looked this real in gameplay. You can actually see the reflections in his Golden Fleece armor and his scars ripple on top of his muscular body as he gets stompy and wild out in the battlefield, running into crowds of hundreds of armed enemies without a care in the world.
For all the change though, the new PS3 Kratos was actually inspired by a concept painting done for God of War II. It was a painting of Kratos ripping a dead vulture in half, and when he was ripping it in half, he looked so violent it was almost bestial, according to the recollections of art director Ken Feldman.
Speaking of which, the new God of War is definitely more blood-soaked than any of its previous incarnations, and that's mostly thanks to the graphical power of the new console. The team used the Titan gameplay from God of War II as a starting-off point for this gory adventure. "If you look at the way Kratos obliterates enemies now, he stabs a guy and it creates a gash in the skin and when you're ripping a Cyclops' eye out, it has tendons trailing behind it," says Puhl, illustratively. "When you slice open a Centaur, its body actually opens up and the guts will spill out. These levels of detail help make the combat experience more realistic." Yes, lovely.
Kratos now has multiple options when it comes to eviscerating the rank-and-file. He can grab a grunt and run him against a wall, crush his skull to pieces, or use him like a bowling ball and throw him into a crowd of enemies. The developer has also updated the contact-sensitive moves. New weapons open up additional attacks. Kratos now has a Fire Bow to set enemies and surroundings ablaze, and he also has the Cestus, a set of chained gauntlets similar to the Gauntlet of Zeus from God of War: Chains of Olympus.
"The theory behind this is that we're trying to get inside of Kratos' head and show his rage and show his anger in these moves," says Puhl. He's cross, is he? "We want the player to really feel it when you're killing these enemies and understand where he's coming from."
The team is also crafting a living, moving world for Kratos to rip apart. The gameplay sequence I'm shown features Kratos standing on the towering Gaia's shoulder as she walks up the side of Mt. Olympus. To offer some Titan perspective, Medusa's Temple from God of War could fit in Gaia's palm on the PS3. But that's just the scale; there's also more depth.
Feldman also says that God of War III ups the ante when it comes to the enemies themselves. Since the audience wasn't going to be captivated by fighting grunts all the way through, the team set out to create bigger, badder, meaner, and fiercer creatures. "We've introduced new gameplay with these bosses," he says. "We're re-introducing the Cyclops as this almost tank-like thing that you can drive around and destroy. We're offering a more in-depth redesign of some of the things gamers may already be used to."
Nintendo finished its E3 keynote a little yesterday and after being bored half to death by some of the less interesting announcements, Nintendo announced not only Super Mario Galaxy 2 but also a new Metroid game called Metroid: Other M.
This game is not another Metroid Prime game and it’s not being developed by Retro Studios. Instead, this looks like a side scrolling Metroid game much like the original Metroid and the popular Super Metroid.Metroid Other M seems to be a hybrid firstperson meets thirdperson action title and will be released in 2010. Finally, we were treated to a taste of a Super Mario Galaxy sequel. Super Mario Galaxy 2 features more 3D Mario action.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also announced, starring not only Mario but finally brings back his dinosaur steed Yoshi. If you haven’t seen the trailers for these games I recommend you look them up on the Internet. You won’t regret it.Nintendo also confirmed an updated version of the Wii Fit, called the Wii Fit Plus (trailer), due out this fall. A full list of Nintendo’s announcements is available, which includes more games and new features.
The new 2D Super Mario Bros. which looks and plays like the original but adds new twists to the mix. The biggest addition we know so far is the ability to have up to four people playing together co-operativity. Team work looks to be the key in figuring out puzzles in this game with everyone controlling a different character. So far we have seen Mario and Luigi and multi-colored Toad people but no Princess Peach or Bowser. Also everyone can get their own Yoshi dinosaur to beat on the head! This time around Mario has the help of his long time friend, Yoshi, to explore the galaxy with him. Expect the same gorgeous brain twisting 3D planet puzzles with a graphical upgrade as well.
If you didn’t get a chance to check out the trailer for Metroid: Other M, here’s a video that’s already been posted on YouTube. It’s from Nintendo’s E3 keynote, the quality is iffy but shows off what the game is about. Team Ninja teams up with Nintendo to bring us a brand new Metroid game in 2010. Metroid Other M is a step in a different direction from the previous generations of Metroid games mixing third-person fighter style action along with first-person shooter perspectives. Reggie promises that the new title will take us deeper into the Metroid universe and reveal more of Samus’ story. From what we saw it’s very action packed and visually stunning and topping the rest of Nintendo’s presentation.
At the E3 video-game convention in Los Angeles yesterday, Microsoft confirmed plans for a sensor-based Xbox 360 control system being developed under the "Project Natal" code name. The system uses full-body motion sensing and voice commands to let people control the action on screen, without requiring traditional video-game controllers. It is basically a prototype camera that can be used as a controller for the Xbox 360.The camera eliminates the need for a handheld input device — instead, the gizmo can track a player's full body movement, recognize their face and voice, scan images of real items and respond to both physical and vocal commands.
Microsoft also debuted 10 exclusive new games and several additions to the Xbox Live online service at their flashy Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference at University of Southern California's Galen Center.
But the biggest gee-whiz moment came when Microsoft senior vice president Don Mattrick and Steven Spielberg introduced "Project Natal."
"Two months ago, Don shared with me the 'Natal' experience, and the gamer in me went out of my mind when I got to be really interactive with this," said Spielberg, a game developer as well as filmmaker. "More dramatically, I felt like I was present for a historic moment, a moment as significant as the transformation from the square-shaped movie screen to CinemaScope and then to IMAX.".The company says it's making the technology available to video-game developers to incorporate into games.Microsoft hasn't said how much Natal will cost or when it will be available, but it has confirmed that the tech will work with all existing Xbox 360 consoles.Spielberg and “his teams” will be working on projects for Natal.
During the news conference, "Project Natal" was demonstrated with three prototype programs -- "Ricochet," a soccer-like game that required players to use their entire body to bounce balls at targets; "Paint Party," an art-making program that used the player's body as the brush; and "Milo," a virtual boy who communicated and interacted with the player.
Among the 10 new games announced that will be released exclusively on the Xbox 360: the open-world action sequel "Crackdown 2," New Orleans-set zombie-killing sequel "Left 4 Dead 2," stealthy third-person shooter "Splinter Cell Conviction," sleek racer "Forza Motorsport 3," first-person shooter "Halo: ODST" and psychological thriller "Alan Wake."
Sony's new handheld is indeed called PSP Go and has up to 16GB of flash memory and Bluetooth support for tethering to mobile phones. One of the worst-kept tech secrets of recent times has finally been outed
That's according to Sony's own Qore gaming show, the latest episode of which was posted prematurely and then yanked, but not before the internet pounced on it.
